Sunshine

Being awoken

And opening my eyes

To the sunshine

Every morning

When I could only see darkness

Showed me that

There was more to me

Than my mental illness

It gave me a reason

To push through

My clouded mind

And conquer

What the day held for me

Difficult

Heartbreaking

But every day proved worth it

When did I last breathe

The breath of fresh air

Left untouched

By my poisonous mind

I couldn't say

Every day

Every awakening

Was a new chance

Fear is invasive

Courage fights well

A strength within

That pries my blind eyes

Open to see

The beauty

That hides in the crevices

Of our societal reality
