Steps

The air holds on to my last breath,

in the building of change,

love,

hate.

            the steps towards adulthood,

                         drifting closer and closer,

                                      the reality becoming clearer.

smiles and laughter lay behind me

the sunshine drifting down into the distance

and i turn

and realize more smiles

will come.

while life may turn,

and stab you in the back,

causing you to lose air,

the pain will end.

the pain will end.

this is what i told myself,

crying,

isolated,

and scared.

the pain never went away.

it instead,

embedded

in

my soul

my heart

and sticks with me

as an experience i will continue to take with me.
