Not Just a Label

We start off life bright eyed and bushy tailed.
Everyone is in our corner,
Telling us that the world is our oyster,
And we can be whatever we want to be.

We tell the people our dreams,
We allow them to know our desires,
Only for them to  tell you that you aren't being
Realistic or Practical.

We wonder why they would say such things,
When they just told us we could be whatever we want to.
We wonder if they are lying to us,
Or if they are trying to help us.

Why keep us in a shell?

Now, we've grown up to think that no matter what we do,
We will never be what we want to be.
Then, are we allowed to be who we want to be?
No.

They tell you how to behave,
How sit, stand, walk and talk.
They tell you how to speak, that you need to pronunciate
And how to think.

Are we all just puppets on string?

No, they are just trying to help us we think,
And then it hits us:
We aren't puppets, we're labels,
And no we can't help it.

We can change who we are and what we do,
But we can never change how other people see us.
No matter what,
Labels are stickers that other people branded onto you.

You couldn't take them off if you tried.
