A Girl

Sat, 10/08/2016 - 16:42 -- JYonker

I am just a girl.

Unaware and overdressed.

Spent too long looking in the mirror

You weren’t there I guess

But distance makes the heart grow harder

Give in, give up, get mad, get hurt

You’re the tragedy of my own choosing

Good girls don’t act like introverts

Walking proud on broken glass

The fine line between confidence and audacity

I’ll hold your hand

It’s safe because it’s temporary

My loyalty proved a fault

Sold into hatred, freed into fear

You brought the first though not the last

Isn’t sadness hard to hear?

When time left, the map unfolded

In the absence of courage, I ran

At the very least you gave me kindness

As a someday happiness of some man

I loved you

That’s easy when you’re so far

But said the rooster to the dog,

“You are what you are”

Blood split isn’t worth anything

Bruises healed never show

Smile, dear, the whole world’s watching

Better to be pretty than to know
