Dear Mom and Dad

Dear Mom and Dad,

I have something to tell you.

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I know this must be a surprise.

I know that you didn't expect to hear this from me.

I know that this must be hard for you to hear,

But I have to tell you.

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I've been so scared.

I've been scared of you,

Of how you'll react.

I've been scared that you won't love me anymore,

Scared that you'll no longer see me as your little girl.

I had to tell you though.

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm still your little girl.

Dad, I'm still your princess.

Mom, I'm still your doll.

I'm the same person I was before I told you.

Nothing has changed,

Except now you know.

Now you know that I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Please,

Say that you still love me.

Promise me that this doesn't change our relationship.

Even though I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

With your conservative views,

With your Catholic faith,

With your judgement

and harsh tongues,

I needed you to know

That I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I know your probably worried.

But now you know the real me.

It may not have been clear before,

But now you know,

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

How can I explain it to you?

I'm head over heels for a girl.

How can I explain it to you?

The way she makes me feel.

There's no other way I can tell you.

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Please know that I've been scared.

I've been scares since I first learned the word "gay".

I've been hiding in a dark closet,

And everytime I find the handle,

I get scared again.

I'm scared of the outside world,

The world that doesn't always accept people

For who they are,

For who they can't help but be,

For people like me.

I'm gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm done hiding

I can't do it anymore.

I am who God made me to be,

And I am scared,

And I am gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Gay is not all that I am.

I am a a smiling face.

I am the room next to yours.

I am a dancer, a singer, a musician,

I am a writer, a poet and a performer.

I am a future engineer.

I am a future lawyer.

I am a human being.

I am your daughter,

And I am gay.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I didn't forget to mention,

I love you.
