In This Day And Age

Location

            In this day and age,

She made love

With the wrong man—

Her father.

A love without consent;

A love filled with hate;

A love that brought new life.

He slaughtered the life—

The same way

He slaughtered her innocence.

            In this day and age,

She is fifteen.

            In this day and age,

It is her fault.

Lack of consent

Twisted and churned

Into a plea to commit

Unlawful fornication

Under strict Islamic law.

            In this day and age,

She will be flogged

For her sins—

In the Maldives

Where the victim is to blame,

            In this day and age.
