To be a Runner

Location

You do not need to be fast.
You do not have to finish the 5k you registered for the morning of,
vulnerable. To be a runner,
just start.
Let the cheetah of your legs move you
across your safari, as far as it can.
You are going to fear getting down in the mud and grime,
gasping,
but you are out there on your grind,
miles of strain evident in the dirt of your shoes,
a runner.
You will cramp and cry, you will walk and drop out,
dry heaving,
but there you are at your limit,
naked and exposed,
a runner.
To be enough,
just approach the starting line as you are,
take off at the gun, and by starting know
that you are something good,
that you are going places
