Hope Floats

Stranded for hours on this lonely island

Nothing to comfort or guide me.

Not a bite to eat or book to read,

Not a soul to sit beside me.

But my hope floats out on the water.

Through stormy weather and freezing nights,

The clothes on my back are shredding.

The brutal days where the sun shows no mercy,

The evenings where I always lack bedding.

But my hope floats out on the water.

Some days I eat a nibble or two,

But the land is dry and barren.

What would I give for a warm meal?

Right now, it isn't much worth sharing.

But my hope floats out on the water.

The water surrounds me, every which way,

The salty liquid too bitter to drink.

Feeling clean is not an option anymore,

As I sit, and sweat, and stink.

But my hope floats out on the water.

I stare out at the ocean and listen to waves,

reciting by memory some poems.

I think of my family, my friends, my dog.

And how I was so lucky to have known them.

But my hope floats out on the water.

Once in awhile a ship comes along,

and meets me at the shore.

I wave hello, but notion for him to go along.

He will never understand what for.

But my hope floats out on the water.

In a world so greedy and full of resentment,

I would much rather be alone.

Sitting on a beach of a deserted island,

This place I would rather call home.

But my hope floats out on the water.

I came out here myself, just me, noone else.

On a boat I bought from earned money.

The rest of the world would choose to turn back,

While I think of it as settling, not running.

But my hope floats out on the water.

The boat is still here, as I keep it tied ashore,

For one day I will consider going back.

But for now I endure nature's battles,

Until integrity and patience is something I do not lack.

But my hope floats out on the water.

My hope has kept me alive on this island,

And I dare not lose it soon.

For hope is what keeps me believing,

And I hope the world has hope, too.

Because my hope still floats out on the water.
