- Learn how to use PowerPoetry's "No Poetry" Poetry Technique to bring an exciting and approachable attitude to the classroom.
- Structure/analytical part of poetry v. heart of poetry
- What is the heart of poetry?
STUDENT GOALS
- Learn to speak own truths through writing
- Practice reciting work with emotion and power
TEACHER DO NOW
- Arrange desks/chairs in the classroom in a circle to create a warm, supportive, intereactive space for students and teachers to communicate
- Ask students to browse the Action Guides on PowerPoetry and write down three topics that they are passionate about
STUDENT DO NOW
- Write down three topics from PowerPoetry's Action Guides that evoke a sense of passion
- Choose one topic to write a brief poem about
MINI-LESSON/ACTIVITY
- Students will have 5-10 minutes to brainstorm three topics they are passionate about and choose one to expand on in a poem
- The first hald of the remaining class time will be used for studeents to construct brief poems (approx. 5-10 lines), in any style, based on the topic they have chosen
- The second hald of the remaining class time will be used for students to read their poems, as chosen by the "Class Reading Master" (the purpose of this exercise is for students to build confidence sharing personal work out loud, rather than focusing on how "good" their poetry is)

HOMEWORK
- Students will choose one other topic from their list to write a brie poem about and ocme in ready to share their work with the class
