Narcissus

I called you the sun
In the hopes that I would be Icarus.
Legendary and famous
And dead in a blaze of passion.
But you are not the sun,
Staring in a reflection
Waiting to be submerged
Outside in the world of life
Things are feeling disturbed
At least things look so clear
In the reflection that I see
"Know your angles and get that lighting"
Mantra repeated with eyes glued to phone
The selfie king wears his crown proudly and scoffs at the peasants who copy
Holding their cameras at impossible angles
"You're so beautiful..."
I whisper in the dark,
your eyes wide and red
but you still have my heart
"I love you..."
Ribs pressed against your skin
you must be starving for my love
"You're so beautiful..."
I whisper in the dark,
your eyes wide and red
but you still have my heart
"I love you..."
Ribs pressed against your skin
you must be starving for my love
Narcissus was cursed
He could only love himself
He made friends with the frat boys
They loved themselves as well.
Narcissus went to parties
and bragged about his muscles
He tried to pick up women
Narcissus
Tall and handsome
Dreamy eyes and soft hair
Kind features, complexion fair
He was beautiful
And he knew it.
But what's wrong with that?
They call me narcissus in psychology
My haters call me vain
Instagram says I'm famous
but the truth is all the same
They love me yet do not know me
Want me even as I walk away
I see myself in the waters edge
A beauty lost to the world.
You lured me under
With sweet promises
And left me all alone to wonder.
Have I lost myself?
Or have I gained you?
Narcissus, handsome as he were
so attractive, named after him are flow’rs
posted an instagram selfie, did he
waiting for his followers’ attention, though fleeting
poor Narcissus: the ‘likes’ donned upon him
Grit in a glass.
Confidence in a cup.
Call it what you will,
as long as you buy another
gin and tonic.
I'm consistent in my ways,
you're just another tab, that's got to pay.
Every time I speak
I only hear of you.
Every waking hour
I see you and me with you.
You've made me a fool
Looking into a pool
Bringing forward my lips
Along for the plunge.
