you caught me

one day

I was walking somewhere new

singing an unfamiliar tune

in a voice that was not my own.

the sand uncomfortable in my shoes

and the wind skipping across my skin

chilling me through

I wasn't even there.

and then I stumbled, falling to the sharp shore

and it was over

until you caught me, holding me snug

and even though I couldn't see it before

I was carried, warm, safe and sound

singing the beautiful song I didn't know I knew

in a voice that was not my own

until you were singing, too.
