Wish for Eternity

The blood and tears that built the land are the same ones still hitting this sand

As I lay on the floor of this desert of oppression

thirsting for equality, my words making no connection

The men in blue striking down on me with their sticks,

It’s the slave master and his whip.

Crying out to closed ears, the same wail of 400 years

These broken bridges they claim to mend but I watch as my pain becomes a trend

They paint their faces with a brush of guilt

while trying to fix that bridge that was never really built

“Equality!” “Equality!” that’s their alarm as they’re pulled in closer to Liberty’s arms

Like a baby they distract me with pretty colors,

Ads and videos saying “love each other”.

But the real change that this country needs,

Is a change I know I will never see

This poem is about:
My country
