What Once Was

Dear Jake,

My relationship with you was

a plant, a flower,

it bloomed like a rose.

Beautiful from afar,

but if I got too close,

held on a little too tight,

the thorns would capture me,

dig deep within my skin.

The roots began to grow,

deeper and deeper.

Even when the roses

had been cut from the stem

the roots remained deep within me.

What once was a home for thorns,

left behind a trail of scars.

Much like the raindrops

that hit my window

on the nights I miss you most.

They evaporate and fade away,

much like your love for me.

What once was has faded,

diminished like time.

I need time.

Time to heal. Time to trust.

Time to work on myself,

and forget what once was.
