Trapped Within the Cracks

Location

I am but a sidewalk, perhaps one less traveled by.

And people always feel the need to walk right over me.

This life is crude, laced with ignorance, but somehow I understand,

That individuals like this will never cease to exist in our shallow world.

Identical crevices, spaced out every so often,

Reveal my stubborn routineness and normality.

Although the small, irregular cracks upon my surface,

Show the true side of me, unique and unparalleled.

Beautiful wonders surround me on either side,

But I am left stuck, forgotten here in the middle.

I have spent many cold nights wondering,

“Would I be missed if I was gone?”

A boy with scruffy hair made his way down the path, his hands in his pockets.

He began to kick a small stone along his way, entranced in deep thought.

Looking down to the ground, all his worries pushed him to panic,

“What if I'll never be good enough for them? I’m slowly slipping through society’s cracks.”

The rain washes away all the pain, all the suffering,

And I know there are many new experiences I’ve yet to discover,

But sometimes I feel so detached, unaware...

Maybe I just don’t take enough time to care.

All I know is,

If there was one thing I could tell you, it would be this:

Mr. Silverstein was wrong,

Adventure will live on.

The sidewalk never ends.
