Those who stand among us

Location

I remember a time when I was scared of them
I never went to close to them
I prejudged them, because I didn't know who they were
I would just look at them from afar
The homeless wouldn't ask for much
With those small cents they'd probably buy a lunch

Growing up I began to realize that they meant no harm
They just needed some support to get up, so I extended my skinny arm
To them and decided that I wasn't going to just pass by them
And so I began
To offer them food or some sort of beverages
Because life tends to test some of our disadvantages

There was a time that I could relate
And I know how hard it is, because I know how much I did hate
The fact that I had no real home
No apartment or motel room to sleep in
Two cars that we would cramp in
And there began my compassion for these men and women
Who walk the streets among us
But most of us do not ask what happened to them
We just look at them like I use to, as some sort of threat

These people love the small things
Because they get them most of the time
And in their head they do believe in miracles
But they know life is filled with obstacles
So they tend not to expect much
Just like I did, I thought life would just keep me there
And I know life doesn't care, I even doubt it asks what's fair and what's not fair
It just keeps moving forward

When I was homeless for that month and a half
I appreciate what is given to me and what I have
And I can't imagine what those men and women go through
Knowing they have little and when they receive little
But do not use those people as an example of something less
Because you never know how life moves or how live is

Don't walk past them with your chest out, or with your fancy clothes on
Pretending you're bigger than they are
If you do that, then you are really far
Because they've learned through their life lessons
Sometimes we just need to listen to those, and grow from them
And realize
That we need to open our hearts and eyes
To those who stand among us
