Then I Will Lie

Location

You see me and you love me

But you haven’t a clue what I am

I’m your daughter, your pride and joy -

Or I was until I told you

I want to sing

You call me the smart one

You tell me I have a gift

Then you turn around and remind me

I have to study the right subjects

And live the right life

or

“You’re going to live on the streets”

If it’s lying to tell you that I’ll be happy

Working at a desk or in a lab

Doing what you tell me I’m good at

Then I will lie.

And if it makes you happy

I’ll keep telling you that lie

Until the day comes

When you can love me

Without attempting to condemn me

To a life I could never live
