Star Spangled

Star Spangled

(Version 3/Draft 1)

We are in your star spangled eyes,

A part of the scars,

That you burnt so harshly into my skin.

So deep, so religious, so damn patriotic.

We are in your star spangled eyes,

A different kind of blood and flesh,

From which you were made.

A different kind of bone and marrow,

From which you were made.

A different kind of skin and crease

From which you were made.

We are in your star spangled eyes,

Latin American roads,

Bathed in mango and chamoy flavored laughter,

Rattling teeth, fire crackers, and the confetti,

From yesterday’s Día de los Muertos.

We are in your star spangled eyes,

Your fear and collective misconceptions.

Your wasteland,

With which our colored hands,

Are worked to feed your disgusting rates of consumption.

Now proven,

We are built from the same fabrics,

Held together by our colored threads.

So what makes us different?

What sets us apart?
