The Skin That Runs Society

Why are people so obsessed with desires of the flesh?

For touching skin that’s dying as we speak.

I don’t understand the temptation in a kiss!

Why does flesh upon flesh make people so weak?

I found my answer on TV screens,

and books and radios and in magazines.

"Love heals all wounds" they say.

But they NEVER defined what love is!

In a world where two plus two

can be no more than four, and that

is coincidentally the same size as all of the models,

and religion is dying...

Why do we find it surprising that people no longer remember

that you do not have to touch something for it to be real?

You cannot light my body on fire with flesh and bone,

so if that is your desire then get a matchbook.

That will be as close as you’re getting thank you very much.

My bones must be too hollow and my blood must be too thin

for my body to find that sensation in embracing him.

I feel like I’m missing out on humanity by lacking lust for skin!

But if you don’t intend to burn my body with that matchbook

then do so with your words, your spirit, your soul.

Burn my mind with your passion for your beliefs.

I will not make my home of flesh, but of your good intentions.

Do us both a favor and keep your hands out of this because

humans taint what they touch with hormonal fingertips.

I must have too much fight or flight in me,

because kisses taste like poison and sex seems overrated.

Did you mean "your soul"?

This is a very deep peom indeed. Although I do not agree in love being bad thing, I do believe that people now only believe in falling in love and money. Like you said "sex seems overrated". However there are different forms of love, don't forget. Love in what you doing and what you believe are some examples. I honestly am looking forward to someone I can experience the love displayed in media, but I am not going to be someone who waits around for it.

I did enjoy your peom, please don't miss understand that.

I didn't intend this poem to be interpreted calling love a bad thing. That was never my intent. The best way I know how to explain the meaning is to break it down by stanza. The first is meant to explain that this poem is written through the perspective of someone who lacks sexual desire. The second attacks the media's potrayl of love. It was intented to refer to how sexualized much of the media has become, and how many people have begun to interpret all sex equating to love (too many people get hurt that way). Thats what I meant by the last line in the stanza: "Why do we find it suprising that people no longer remember that you do not have to touch somthing for it to be real?".  The third stanza is again, taking the perspective of a person who lacks sexual desire. How people who feel that way often feel broken and are very very cautious when it comes to love because of how the media has jaded many people into thinking that sex is the 'most imporant' or 'highest' expression of love. The last stanza expresses a desire to both want and be wanted for who the person really is and not just looks or physical pleasure. "Sex seems overrated" has a different meaning once you know the perspective this is written from. Though I know that's too much for most people to get from a short poem, so I wanted people to take from it that I believe society should put less emphasis on physical love and more on emotional love (after all, the divorce rate in america is astounding).

Your comment is very much appreciated. It's always nice to see how my poetry reads through another person's eyes. (and yes, i did mean "your soul". I will fix that.)
