More Than a River

A notebook clenched tight to her chest,

She fills it with rivers red,

Against the crowd she seems to flow,

A teenage girl whom none know...

She tells herself 'I enjoy the pain,

The burns, and cuts, his acid rain,'

It all fades as she sends her mind away

To a place by the sea,

At the top of the highest tree,

Where her soul shall hang.

An offered hand, her biggest fear,

You'll see her wrong if you get near,

'Why don’t you see I deserve no rights?'

Crafted a heart darker than night

All to forget what warmth was like

Or the gentle pressure of her hand held tight.

Numb and cold are everyday,

Mouth moves but nothing to say,

The screams of thunder echo inside her head,

Filled with truth that's all but dead,

Hollowed out so none ever see,

Inside the teenage girl who let the world be.

I tell myself 'I enjoy the pain,

The burns and cuts, your acid rain'

It all fades as I send my mind away,

To a place by the sea,

The top of the highest tree,

Where my soul shall hang.

Red river beds are empty,

Barely a drop left to find

Eyes left open empty and blind.

The one who knew me best,

That river filled notebook still pressed to my chest.
