Just Like We Did Before

Grandpa Woody,

Remember how we used to play together,

In the living room at your green house?

Someone else lives there now,

And we rarely ever go there.

I had a dream the night you died;

It was like a message from Heaven Above,

Planned so a young girl would understand -

A girl like me, with you - a person I love.

When you come back, I'll tell you about it, in detail.

Then we can play and laugh together, just you and me.

I still remember the dream, Grandpa.

We were in outer space.

You'd brought a great big chest of toys,

And we were playing, there in space,

Just like we did before.

After a while you closed the chest,

And told me you had to leave.

You told me I wouldn't see you again -

Not for a long, long time.

I woke up and cried,

And Mom came in.

I told her about my dream.

Later that morning, Grandma called,

And told us that you'd died.

She told us the time -

It was late the night before,

But the amazing thing was...

You died at the end of my dream.

I still don't understand it, Grandpa.

Why me?  Why you?

Why would anyone send me a dream

To tell me about your death?

Could it have been sent

From Heaven Above?

Or from someone else who died?

When you come back, we can talk about it, you and me.

We can play and laugh together -

Just like we did before.

I still miss you, Grandpa,

Even though it's been at least five years.

And when you come back,

We can talk about it, you and me.

We can play and laugh together -

Just like we did before.

              Love,

              Madeline

For my Great-Grandpa
