I Still Made My Parents Proud
Location
It’s like we spend our whole lives learning about what’s right
Or what’s not right.
And then when we grow up,
They expect us to have our own opinions.
They take us to church, or meetings.
“Do this”, or, “don’t support that”, or, “don’t talk to them”, right?
But still have our own opinions.
And then we’re supposed to be friends with everyone.
But not really everyone,
Because gay marriage is illegal in 33 states.
And my dad says I’m not allowed to marry a black man,
But the president is black.
Look where he is!
And Grandpa says I have to be a Republican,
So at dinner when I have Democratic views,
I have to shut up.
Because "life's not fair".
But you want me to be sophisticated,
And important,
And most of all, unique…
But how can I be unique when I think just like the rest of society?
So now my best friend is a lesbian,
I kissed a black boy,
I’m a pro-choice-Democrat,
And I still made my parents proud.
