I Can't Be Who You Want

I can't be who you want,
Believe me 'cause I've tried.
Why can't I be who I want?
Why must I change my mind?

What happened to the unconditional
With which you promised to love me so?
Either learn to accept my different,
Or be forced to watch me when I go.

I know you don't mean to hurt me,
And that's what makes this so hard.
But if you really love someone,
You love more than just one part.

I can't be who you want,
Believe me 'cause I've tried.
Why can't I be who I want?
Why must I change my mind?

You expect of me so, so much -
You want me to be the best I can -
But don't you see that your expectations
Are not part of my own life plans?

Why can't I be my own different?
That is, the side that's really me.
Would you love me if I were dishonest?
Lose myself to who you want me to be?

But I don't want to be who you want,
I know because I've tried.
I'm going to be who I want,
Because I shouldn't have to change my mind.
