Foundation

You wonder why we don't participate?
If you'd look at us and actually see what's happening right in front of you
We would say:
Engage us
Ask real questions, make us think, grow our minds
We're dying to learn, but we get the same canon
     over
     and over
     and over again
We know you have to cater to the lowest common denominator, but
GIVE ME SOMETHING!
please...
We're down on our knees, begging, hoping
that today it will be worth it.
We know an education is the foundation for our future.
But, how are we supposed to build our upper middle-class castles
on the muck that is fed to us every day in the classroom?
So I began to search for the materials to build on my own
making mistakes, toppling towers, but I try to build anyway.
But I cry for the others-
I took care of myself, but not everyone has the
same opportunities, the same drive that I did-
So, I ask, not for myself,
but for my peers.
The members of the rising generation
who are supposed to fix the world that you broke
If you don't give us the tools
HOW can we?
Teaching isn't easy
Crap pay for long hours - I get it.
But you signed up for it.
Remember the fire you once had?
All I'm asking is that you find it again.
That fire? That's YOUR foundation.
So use it to build ours.
