Finding Wings: A Ballad
Finding Wings
I met you when I was scared, when I felt lost and alone,
But you helped me learn, and now that I’ve grown,
I see everything you did for me, every sacrifice you made.
I remember all the times you went out of your way,
To help me with the simplest things,
And to show me how to use my wings.
Thanks to you I can now look up on a dark and stormy day,
And feel the caress of the wind, as it blows the rain away.
I can see the laughter behind a spilt cup of coffee,
Or the quiet peace hidden in the shade of a palm tree.
I notice the promise concealed in a beginner
And I know that smooth seas never made a skillful sailor.
Some people come into our lives, by fate or destiny,
Others come, but leave again, leaving a faded memory.
The lessons that we learn from them will stay with us before,
We go to graves or pass them on to someone we adore.
So everything I learned from them,
I’m passing on to you.
Whether the weather is sunny and bright,
Or yields to storm clouds, making it dark as the night
There is always one place I know, no matter what, I can always go
Somewhere that’s my home when my house is no longer home.
Where hope and trust can always be found
On green grass and torn up ground.
When I start to lose faith in my own abilities
And the whispers start to eat at me
I know there is a place that I will always belong
And you never judge, you just laugh, and correct me
when I’m wrong.
Now I see the ways that I can go forward and improve.
And it’s all because I met you.
Some people come into our lives, by fate or destiny,
Others come, but leave again, leaving a faded memory.
The lessons that we learn from them will stay with us
before,
We go to graves or pass them on to someone we adore.
So everything I learned from them,
I’m passing on to you.
