Empty Dorms

by Ariel Douglas (17 June 2016)

Empty dorms and empty hearts

Raging storms, we're torn apart

Lonely thoughts and lonely souls

Chaos wrought as we claw our way to our goals

Searching eyes and searching shadows

Telling lies and fighting battles

Shouldn't there be more to it than this?

We claim desire and pretend loyalty

We swallow fire and act like royalty

All the games we play and the lies we sing

The horrid things we say and every sinful thing

The overwhelming lust and gripping evil fear

While we claim to trust and believe that He is near

How can that truly be following?

So quick to judge others and also in our self defense

Kicking hurting, broken brothers for the slightest offense

Petty arguments and quarrels; gossip, rumors, and slander

Acting so superiorly moral, with an utter lack of realistic candor

We're so very selfish, so torn up and broken

With every disgusting blemish hidden by fancy words spoken

Is this what we're called to?

But if we walk like He did and fight like He fought

What is broken would be mended for the freedom that He bought

There would be unity and hope, a path for the lost

A means to cope, knowing He's already paid the cost

We would be free to live and die, to carry out His call

In Him our faith would truly lie, we would on our knees stand tall

For isn't this what we're meant to do?
