Child Lights

Location

At the age of 24
I was driving down the urban road.
The world seemed desolate,
dark,
alone,
grim.
In that drive of silence,
I saw it.
A faint green light.

Appearing for just a moment,
it disappeared within a second.
Eyes widened with exuberance.
There it was again.
Further away another faint, green light.

By the second,
the road filled with life.
These tiny green lights
were the insects of past.

And there she was.
A little girl,
brown of hair,
chasing the green lights.
Her smile lit up as bright,
as the midnight moon.
Her happiness overwhelmed me.

Tears slowly cascaded
down my ivory cheek
as the little girl disappeared
amongst the lights.
For the child was of my blood.
She was me.

The green lights reminded
this desolate,
dark,
alone,
grim,
woman that she was once
happy.

Happy...
