A Bop to Emotional Maturity

Location

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,

but my pure love and affection isn’t something

he wants a part of his daily diet.

His abdomen growls for sweet skin and curves,

for enclosed embraces and lingered kisses.

The meal I’ve prepared is too abstract.

Mama said I will understand when I’m older

Fairytales say wait for Happily Ever After.

Society says Don’t Think, Just do.

So I fell into his trap and I didn’t have a clue.

I made him feel needed, he saw himself as my god.

What we had wasn’t real but the only life that suffered was mine.

My common sense was blinded, My loyalty enslaved

My mind was gone, but my feelings stayed the same.

I clawed at his door like a hopeless cat.

As time passed by, he gave me the cold shoulder

Mama said I will understand when I’m older

In order to be successful, you need to be wise.

Wisdom sees past the deception and lies.

I do not hate the player, I do not hate the game.

A new view on life keeps me in the proper lane.

He continues to get hungry, he wants to be fed.

But I’m no longer first in the kitchen or last in the bed.

As I’ve matured, his attempts became bolder.

But my heart has been locked for its true beholder.

Mama said I will understand when I’m older

This was a piece I did in my Creative Writing class junior year. C hancelier "Xerø" Skidmore, a internatinal slam poet champion of 2014, had a number of workshops in our class, and this is the result of one of them.
