The Mountains
What titan war
Erected such peaceful giants?
What earthly force pushed forth
The jagged piers that pierce my heart?
Without motive nor vision nor chisel,
They’ve slumbered for centuries,
Serene and unsympathetic
Bringing sighs to the mouths of witnesses
And words to the mouths of poets.
First reaction? To bow.
Until you realize
That this is the universe
That pulses through your veins
Laid out for your convenience
On miles and miles of rock.
