Life in the Dark Places

A barren world, dark and cold

Stained with death and mercy pleas

A place forgotten as we grow old

A million lives spent for "the land of the free"

A little boy, dearest of them all

Grew up in the blink of an eye

Put on his boots and took the call

For he was willing to die

At the heart of every soldier is a youthful soul

Man on the outside, boy within

Sets out on the frontlines with a single goal:

Make the world safe for his family again

But time goes on, the war never ends

The sin of the world is too great

Lives are spent in the fight to defend

The soldier faces an unfortunate fate

While it may seem an unforgiving pattern

There's purpose in this constant war

The men who fight against terror and disaster

Give our country a chance for more

Don't fear the war, it helps us grow

Our home is a flower; the war is a storm

Though you wish for the sun and its warming glow

A flower drinks water before it transforms

The battlefield is dark and abysmal

But empty it is not

The hearts of the soldiers are warm and hopeful

Though stuck in a rather daunting spot

The soldier will return one day

Though he's not the boy he used to be

He's lost his youthful joy in the fray

To give you the sun and set you free
