American Dream

Fri, 08/14/2020 - 14:32 -- Tiarra3

This is no dream to me

It was not my ancestors dream

It was not something we wanted to achieve

Kidnapping and capturing brought us here

Where we built on once sacred Native lands

Beaten, castrated, raped, and sold

The American dream has never been an attainable goal

Unless your white or able to adopt whiteness

Otherwise your just a spot that faces injustice

It was not my ancestors dream to build a nation

A nation with a government that does not give a damn

Our rights

Our dreams

We are not respected

That sweet available dream has never been available to me

Slavery

Convict-lease labor and sharecropping

Black Codes and Jim Crow

Resegregation and Common Core

That American Dream has never been seen

We can't get loans without high interest

But as long as we're Black and Brown you have no interest

The American Dream is not for me

We built this nation

Change this injustice or else it will burn

We will not rebuild it so give us our American Dream

This poem is about:
My family
My community
My country
Our world
