Through free verse,
I don't believe,
that the pages of my life
can be seen.
Life was not made
to be described
in big, or small, words.
I've known rivers:
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I, too, am America.
The college loner struggling to find her way,
Raised by the mother still finding hers.
Becoming an adult in this economy,
Searching for hope and a way out of this depressing time,
Langston Hughes’ mama told him “Life ain’t been no crystal stair”
Well, I reckon it be the same way for me, too
No crystal stair ever showed up for me,
