We live here in the earth,
deep in soil, blood
red in clay and skin cresting
the sky,
we inhale.
We are young;
Face coated in oil
and litter,
fumes halo our head
We are the Foundation but,
The pigment of our skin determines our fate,
Whether we're worth a second thought before you attack,
WE ARE
We are one world,
We are one people.
We are not defined by a race,
We are not defined by a religion.
We are one nation,
We are not perfect.
We are rough drafts,
a template for future experiences.
We can not promise love,
safety,
sometimes not even basic needs.
We are who we are.
