In the fable of Hansel and Gretel, the family has become quite poor*
For a scarcity had hit and the father had not much to get
So the mother thought “Getting rid of the children is a better score”
Once upon a time an unwealthy shopkeeper lived in a large city with his second wife and his two chldren. They lived in a small one bedroom shack with very little to eat or drink.
We thought you'd do your part from the very start
and provide for us like a small marketer running his cart.
But no. You couldn't handle the prod, the pinch, the feuding.
She is the girl,
hiding her bruises,
Gretel's her name;
He is the boy,
pretending to be strong,
Hansel's his name;
In a small box
they lived together
