Wish to go back

How we wish we could go back.
Yearning for those easy days of pretend and fun.
With the worst pain is a scrapped elbow.

No care in the world, blind to the horrors around us.
The scariest thing being the boogeyman-
Not the other people lurking around us.
Not those closest to us.
With hands that roam.
And eyes that stare too long.

As kids we think we are invincible.
That we can fly like superheros,
Take bullets from close range and survive anything.

We believe we can do anything.
That the future is bright and shiny,
But as we age we realize the world isn’t so pleasant.
That people aren’t so nice.

Now we know what pain feels like.
How we wish we could go back.
