Why can't we live?

Stop! Don't shoot! I'm unarmed

The words of an African-American male about to take his last breath

Another day

Another dawn

Another young black male killed

As we are left to mourn

We tried to forgive with Trayvon Martin

But it's not a mistake if it keeps happening

Everyday we are struggling

Trying to come up with answers to these never ending questions

Why can't we live

Why are we being followed in stores

Why are we being minimized

As if we are not valuable in your eyes

What is it that makes us worthless

Is it the way we walk

Is it the clothes we wear

Or is it because of the way we do our hair

Is it because we became more than what you expected us to be

Or is it because we went above and beyond to fulfill our destiny

Although we have to work harder just to be heard

Know this

We will succeed and we will prevail

And we will always come out on top
