Who is America?

We've always been a Melting Pot

Isn't that what teachers say

Before they tell you what you're not

And what you took away

Why should a simple figurehead

Be criticized like this

For having different ancestors

For being who she is

And who gave anyone the right

To insult her online

We're all from other countires

This land is hers as much as mine

What happened to America

That claimed that it could be

The land that welcomed everyone

Who pledged their loyalty

If that America returned

We'd fix what's since been broken

We'd speak with voices we've not heard

Since Washington had spoken

America for Americans

But who's right is it to say,

"This land is mine, it can't be his!"

And turn someone away

Things that shouldn't matter,

Like race, ethnicity

Should not divide us like we are

In "The Land of the Free"

So who can judge a woman

For being who she is?

Is she not America?

We're all Americans.

This is a great poem for the slam! I like the rhyming- too many people choose free verse
