Where We Hid

Location

Why leave?
When the cover of the curtain so soft like satin can hide you
Always hiding
Because the reality of being found out is terrifying
And the curtain is soothing
It's a home made of secrets and faces and smiles
Because the veil is what keeps us happy

The curtain is thick, suffocating us in our delusions
and when we try and find a way out
when the air grows thick with festering anguish
we are stuck.

The curtain lies in front of a blocked closet.
It provides a safe place, away from leering eyes of the judgmental
away from curious glances
away from questions.

But we scrape the courage to crawl forward
and when we're seen, we retreat
back into the pit we've rotted in for years.
Because the cover of the curtain turned thick duvet is inviting.

So we waited.

We held our own, scavenging from the shadows of our fear until we found ourselves.
And we began to poke our heads out.
We smelled fresh air and it flushed out blackening lungs.
We found solace in life away from the curtain.

Eventually, we left the curtained closet altogether.
When we did, we learned that maybe it wont get better.
But we can.
