Where I'm From

Where I’m from people cared about their animals more than they cared about their kids.

The girls work like slaves, and they didn’t care about what the boys did.

Where im from, us girls had a distressful.

My mom never talked to me about college, I guess she wanted me to be like her,

an abusive housewife.

I’m from the countryside, where gunshots rang my ears.

I  was just a little girl  , so guns were one of my fears.

I’d stuff flowers up my nose.

With dirt in between my toes.

And I’d lay on the ground waiting for the wind to blow.

Where I’m from, we couldn’t afford all of the latest trends.

I guess that’s why I only had imaginary friends.

Where I’m from there were extremely hot nights

Rooms with no lights

and while we went to sleep, there were outdoor fights.

Where I’m from we lived in a house that was filled with roaches

But now I jump out of my skin when one approaches

Where im from my mom would trade food stamps for money

But she never used it on us so I thought that was kinda funny.

Where I’m from, you’d get slapped if you talked crazy.

And thrown outside in the freezing cold if you were being lazy.

Where I’m from you’d get beaten to sleep at the age of 3.

Where I’m from Jesus was your best friend.

He’s always watched over me.

Honestly, all I cared about was protecting my brother.

Because I didn’t want him to deal with my mentally ill mother.

Where I'm from, You’d get kicked in the face, If you didn't make an A.

But now it's all different, so this is what i have to say.

Where I’m from was filled with grief and sadness.

But now I have been rescued from all of that madness.

Where I’m from helps me read the poor.

Because I was there once, so I can understand them more

Where I’m from won’t slow me down, because I have so much power.

Where I’m from helps me grow like a fresh, exotic flower.

Now things are different and I’m accepting the blessings as they come

But my grandma always tells me, “Kay, Never forget where you came from.”

Where I’m from people cared about their animals more than they cared about their kids.

The girls work like slaves, and they didn’t care about what the boys did.
