What do you say?

What do you say to a person you never talk to?

A quick hey?

A silent nod?

What do you say when this person is your mother?

What do you say to the father who wasn't there,

But is now deceased

And you regret every last mean thing you've ever said to him?

What do you say to his brother who looks exactly like him?

What do you say to his mother who's going through the depression stage?

What do you say to your brother who constantly asks if you're okay?

You lie and say yes

But he knows it's not true because he sees the obituary peeking out your notebook

With the last piece of sheet music you've ever sung him and last, and first, poem you've ever written him sticking in it

When he hears you talking to him every night pleading for forgiveness

Then crying yourself to sleep when no answer comes

What do you say to yourself

When you're trying to talk yourself off the edge of the dark abyss growing before you?

What do you say to the God you don't fully believe in

But is hoping will save you?

What do you say to the friends that you left behind who might have forgotten you?

What do you say to the voices no one else can hear

Who's constantly singing a sinful sweet melody in your ear?

What do you say when the only one who understands you is the subject of He said?
