Too Afraid To Take It Off

Location

Painted face,

Styled hair,

Remember grace,

Is just another thing you wear.

Pretty dress,

Nice shoes,

Look your best,

An object to be seen and used.

They gave me a mask,

And with trembling fingers,

I took it up and put it on.

Come find me in this madness,

Just another lonely girl.

I’m hiding,

From their fingers,

From their pointing,

From the world.

And I’m afraid.

Small talk,

Pretty smile,

Keep your waist small,

Model the latest style.

Be strong,

Be good,

Never be wrong,

Think everything you should.

They gave me a mask,

Encrusted with diamonds,

No wasn’t a choice from the start.

Come find me in this madness,

Just another lonely girl.

I’m hiding,

From their fingers,

From their pointing,

From the world.

Because I’m afraid.

So scared of rejection,

Of disapproving glares,

Of failing and falling,

Of judgement-driven stares.

I’m frightened of missing,

The mark that they set,

Scared that they’ll see right through me;

My mask’s not perfect yet.

Speak loud,

Stand tall,

Be proud,

Impress them all.

Act brave,

Fake love,

Always be the same,

Never be enough.

They gave me a mask,

And now won’t you please,

Untie it and take it away?

Come find me in this madness,

Just another lonely girl.

I’m hiding,

From their fingers,

From their pointing,

From the world.

And I’m afraid.

I just wanted to let you know that you are enough! Way to not hold it all in and be real.
