Tears for Afghanistan

Today I feel grief
Unlike any other
My country has fallen
In hands of angry men
My mother weeps
For whom I do not yet know
Perhaps for my brother
Who fought for change
But couldn’t bring it
Perhaps for my father
Who would sing
Hoping for better days
Perhaps for me
Who will no longer
Open her books
But instead will
Forget the words
She once could read
My mother weeps
For her country
For the people
Who left and for those
Who no longer can
Who like us
Will wait in darkness
In fear of the future
Where the past
Will come
Back again
