Taken for Granted

I sacrifice much,

I try hard.

On to bare minimums I clutch,

So that you won't be scarred.

I give you my share,

I let you have your fill.

I give you my care,

I pay the emotional bill.

I keep you on the right track,

I correct your mistakes.

Your appreciation I lack,

You say you hate me for goodness sakes.

And why pray tell do you feel this way?

What did I do to deserve this?

Everything I say,

Is like an ex-lover's kiss.

Undesireable and uncared for,

Stupid and hated.

You wish to kick me out the door,

Maybe then you'd be sated.

But some day I will leave,

I won't be here anymore.

You probably won't grieve,

You'll probably soar.

But you'll also see how hard things are,

You'll realize what I did for you.

I will be far,

And the bill will be due.

You'll realize how easy you had it,

How sheltered you were.

You'll be hit,

You'll be stuck with a burr.

You'll be in pain,

You'll see what I went through.

You won't dance in this rain,

You'll get a clue.

You'll know what I did,

You might even care.

But when you come for me kid,

I won't be there.
