Swallow

As the night settles, it begins.

Slyly, creeping deeper into my psyche

Darkening, the rims of my thoughts.

Slowly, swallowing my heart in captivity.

As the shadows crawl,

the creaking floor boards

Rattle inside my head,

My heart pumpers

as the sounds heighten.

The whole of my being shakes

as my fingers  nervously

reach for the switch.

As the lights flicker on,

the darkness recedes with the night,

waiting for another war that can never be won.

Waiting for a chance of near captivity

to swallow the last of me whole.
