Before the Sunrise

Location

Before the Sunrise

Before the sunrise, every little girl should lay tucked in,

In a safe home where mom and dad are best friend.

The sunrise should bring hope and beginning,

But for too many it brings shame and an end.

Before the sunrise, beyond the naïve blinded eyes,

There’s fear of the unknown and trembling at the realized

Hoping and praying this could all just be lies,

But even with this, the night offers anything but surprise.

Before the sunrise, there’s anguish and pain

Where reality no longer can keep you sane

The one you were to trust is the one of whom you are afraid.

And even if you asked, they would never refrain, but have always betrayed.

So you keep quiet in expectancy drenched in horror,

While you keep your eyes pealed to the door

As if a hard enough glare could prevent the fate from all nights before

Until the knob turns and the hinge creeks once more.

Time after time, night after night,

Until innocence feels so far lost, why bother another helpless fight?

Did she say something wrong; did she give the wrong eye?

The thought that she deserves this no longer feels like a lie.

And silence becomes her best-learned disguise

So, what would I change if there were one thing I could rearrange?

It'd be that every silent girl would have a voice, and new life in her eyes

And her shame, fear, and suffering would no longer be hidden before the sunrise.
