stray

i'm the stray cat you've let inside your house.

you never intended for me to say,

in fact,

you forget why i haven't been kicked out.

you don't know me,

i don't make myself easy to know.

the only reason you've let me into your home

is that you're easy to know and feel like you should help.

but i've stayed my welcome, and then some more,

you have friends over and they see me on your floor.

they understand: they're good people too.

but they don't get how such a mangy stray ended up with you.

maybe you don't want me gone and i've overthought again,

but i can't let you go,

i need some kind of friend.
