Something Inside

Something lives deep inside me

Something that hungers

Something that burns

Something dark and hot

It smolders

A rumbling deep inside

When I grow cold and empty

That’s when I feed it

Memories and emotions

Crushed down

Small

Hard

Black

That’s what it eats

A fire flickers to life

Bright and hot

Pieces of me are consumed

As smoke bellows

Filling what’s inside me with warmth

Building a pressure

Which doesn’t last

The fire burns out

The smoke escapes

Through the cracks

And flaws

Of me

The pressure drops

Leaving me cold and dark

Empty and alone again

So I gather more pieces of myself to burn
