The Soldier

How must it be to be so far away from home ?
Do you ever feel scared ? As if you are alone?
True you have your other men, but it is not the same is it as having a friend
I wait for the day when you finally return
You won't be the man I knew, this I have learned
You have such courage -such fight
You stand up for what is right
Thanks to people like you we can sleep at night
Because you are the protectors, the ones who fight
What horrors you have seen that no one should see
What hours you've cried for the men who won't be coming home
What nightmares you have of hearing the bombs
And when you come home- the war has just begun
I wait for the day when you can finally come home
But that is not to be - you won't be one of the lucky ones
I get a call that changes my life
They tell me you died, saving the life of a child
You would be the one trying to save a child, you always were a little bit wild
My respect for you will never die because you are the soldier, the one who I knew
May you rest in peace forever my friend, hang up your gun, let your boots come off
You deserve so much more than we can give - the soldier of love
You didn't ask what the price was you had to pay
You just did it and never saw another day
Thank you my friend for saving that child
She is still alive, and she's a bit wild
Her story goes from town to town - a story about a man
Who went down in front of her- and she knew he would die
So she sang him a song - a sweet little song
You are going to make it home she said a bit sad
He smiled and said "Don't be sad, this is the way it must be"
The little girl smiled and said "You are a soldier, and you have saved me"
Here's to the ones who never made it alive
May your memory live on - may it never die
And I ask God to watch over the soldiers everywhere
Keep them in your tender care
And to my friend- my soldier so dear
Here are the words you wanted to hear
I pray that someday, I will see you again,
Semper Fi- my friend
