By the Sea

I think the reason so many lovers get married on the beach

Is because it’s the one place

The only public place

Where marriage is all around you,

Where the ocean marries the shore

Where love seems less temporary.

Sure she goes through waves,

Highs and lows in the tides that bind them

But they always come back

Together

A marriage lasting longer than any trace of the human race

Longer than the creatures who walk

Or crawl

Or fly

Or swim in the ocean

A marriage before it could be observed

Perhaps that’s their secret

But that’s what I see, alone by the sea

A spark

An ounce of hope

That things will get better

That I will get better

That perhaps love doesn’t always have to end

Though you claim all things do

And that maybe someday you’ll come back to me

When your tide rolls in
