Queen of Hearts

Sat, 09/08/2018 - 17:42 -- Penola

She didn’t notice, at first

That anything was wrong

She always felt whole

But They told her she couldn’t be

She was not Right

Not the right size

Not the right complexion

Not the right attitude

Not the right interests

Not the right person

So They changed her

They cut her with their expectations

And plastered foundation on her wounds

They stuffed her full of lies

And gorged her on Their ‘perfection’

So she could throw it up and smile

And be happy because she was Right

And one day the girl

Who was born perfectly whole

Let the talons of Fear

And Doubt and Self-Hatred

Tear apart her soul, and

Slink off into the night, her

Still-beating heart clutched

Tightly in Their grasp
