Prejudice
There is so much prejudice in this world,
I wish that I could just make it all disappear.
Just because someone is different from you,
It doesn’t mean that you are better than them.
You walk past a blind man, and you see him stumble
Yet you keep walking, completely aloof. Why?
Why do you think that you are so superior
Just because you can see?
If you stopped and helped the blind man,
You may come to realize that he is no different than you.
He may have a wife and kids too.
You may come to realize that the blind man can see who you really are in your willingness to help others.
You walk past a deaf teen, trying and failing to communicate
Yet you keep walking even though you know you can help. Why?
Why do you think you are so superior
Just because you can hear?
If you paused for a moment to help remove a language barrier,
You may come to realize that that teen is no different than you.
They might have an amazing sense of humor too.
You may come to realize that the deaf teen can hear who you really are in your tone of voice when you help others.
You walk past these people, and the myriad of others trapped in the shadows
Yet you keep walking just because they are deemed “different” by society. Why?
Why do you think you are so superior
Just because societal norms deem you “normal”?
If you step back, just for a split second, and looked at the big picture,
You may come to realize that these people are no different from you.
They may have moments of pure disdain for themselves too.
You may come to realize that these people will accept you for who you are.
They will accept you, damaged goods and all.
If I could make people realize that the citizens deemed “different”
Are truly no different from themselves,
Then wouldn’t there be less hate… less prejudice?
